Journey Cover – Where, and how, it works
Injured on your way to or from work? Your membership may include Journey Cover — here's what you need to know.
What Is Journey Cover?
Journey Cover is a group personal accident insurance policy (supplied by AIG Australia) that covers eligible members for accidents during their direct commute to and from work.
This includes travel between job sites and your residence within WA, NSW, and SA. Claims are not assessed by Red Union, but instead the insurer, and are governed by the insurer's policy.
About the Insurance
Who is the insurer?
Currently the associations have a policies with AIG Australia Limited (AIGAUST) which is arranged by our insurance brokers.
None of Red Union Support Hub or any of its affiliates (i.e. NPAA, TPAA, IWUA, SOPAA, or AMPS) are insurance agencies, however they do take out Journey Cover that insures eligible members. Therefore claims are not processed by us or your union officers directly, but instead by the insurer's staff.
What is the policy?
As of the writing of this article (March 2026) the policy wording is as follows:- Nurses: Policy wording is "AIG Group Personal Accident Journey Cover" insured with period ending 31 November; and
- Teachers: Policy wording is "AIG Group Personal Accident Journey Cover" insured with period ending 31 November.
The policy wording can be found at AIG.com.au by searching for "AIG Group Personal Accident Journey Cover" and sorting by newest.
The association's Certificates of Currency, as renewed from time to time, can be found at the associations' various insurance webpages (e.g. NPAN | NPASA | NPAWA | TPAN | TPASA | TPAWA). Please let the hotline know if a Journey Cover certificate appears expired or out of date ASAP.
Who Is Eligible?
Generally, all three criteria must be met at the time of the incident for a claim to be considered:
- Active & Paid: You are a financial (active, paid-up) member.
- Aged range: You are aged between 16 and 65.
- Eligible jurisdictions: You are a member of an eligible association in a covered state in which the incident occured – specifically it must have occured in any of the following:
- New South Wales,
- South Australia, or
- Western Australia.
- Eligible activity: Only incidents that occur on direct travel between your residence and place of employment are eligible.
The insurer may apply other eligibility criteria and exclusions; but the above criteria are the basis ones to know if its worthwhile looking into a claim further.
Covered Associations & States
Teachers – TPAA incidents in SA, WA, or NSW only.
Nurses – NPAA incidents in SA, WA, NSW, or TAS only.
There is no Journey Cover policy for AMPS, SOPAA, or IWUA.
If you are injured in an incident in an eligible State, even though you live or work in another state, it may still be covered (e.g. cross the border from Qld to NSW & incident happens before reaching work within NSW).
How to Make a Claim
Journey Cover claims are handled directly by AIG — not our industrial team. Here's the process:
- Contact our Hotline Support Hub to confirm your eligibility;
- Hotline can help you only by providing the insurers basic claim forms as PDF or Word (if you prefer this instead of online);
- Lodge your claim with AIG using one of these options:
- Online (easiest): digitalclaims.aig.com
- Phone: 1800 331 013
- Email: austclaims@aig.com
- AIG will assess your claim and handle the process from there.
You may need to provide supporting documents (medical reports, incident details, etc.). See AIG's claim overview at digitalclaims.aig.com/claim-overview/au/en for what's required.
